The brief

BAE Systems employs many thousands of scientists and engineers, but its innovation eco-system stretches way beyond the boundaries of the organisation. The company engages with SMEs, academics, industrial partners and scientific bodies to deliver the solutions that will protect those who protect us. Engage was commissioned to create an event to bring this community together with customers to showcase ideas, stimulate new thinking and identify opportunities for future development.

The work

We quickly realised that we needed to embrace the eco-system directly, and with BAE System’s blessing we invited SMEs and academics to participate directly in the event, through over 60 exhibition stands. We worked with internal and external speakers to craft thought-provoking content that was then designed and animated for maximum impact (moving away from traditional PowerPoint bullets). We held the event over two days to encourage maximum participation across UK MOD, government and media.

The outcome

Finalist for UK Conference of the Year, 96% rated the event ‘Excellent’ with 97% rating it as ‘Very Relevant’ to their needs. Individual feedback praised the content and organisation of the event with one visitor saying, ‘This is about the best event that’s run in the industry’. Above all, delegates were grateful for the opportunity to network with industry and academic peers, with several going on to develop more formal relationships. This was especially pleasing for us, since we had recommended greater networking opportunities than typical and historical industry events.
