Inspiring the Next Generation of Engineers

The brief

The UK has a shortage of engineers, with research suggesting we need a million more by 2030. In common with other technology companies, Raytheon UK wants to encourage more students to study STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). Raytheon asked Engage to help with their STEM activities for schools and youth organisations.

The work

The Quadcopter Challenge is a competition for teams to address a specific engineering challenge, such as how drones could help to tackle our climate crisis. Each team receives a kit of quadcopter parts and then works together to address whatever problems are set, competing in regional heats. A prestigious Grand Final at the RAF Museum sees regional winners pitted against one another for the ultimate accolade of Quadcopter Challengers Winners.

The outcome

Hailed as ‘our most successful ever competition’, over 92 teams from across the UK competed, with over 500 students participating directly. Teams from across schools, youth groups and cadets were engaged to learn about design, manufacturing, problem-solving, engineering and above all teamwork. The future of industry is in good hands.
