Visualising Laser Directed Energy Weapons

CATEGORY: Film & Digital

The brief

Laser Directed Energy Weapons (LDEW) promise pinpoint accuracy and can be used to deter, degrade or destroy multiple threats without ‘ammunition’ and at considerably lower cost than traditional weapons systems. BAE Systems commissioned Engage to create a short vignette, showcasing the capability of LDEW in a maritime environment.

The work

We conceived, storyboarded and created a short film demonstrating a typical scenario in which LDEW might come to the fore. Using cinematic CGI, our photo-realistic animation tells the story of a Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate on operations in the Indian Ocean.

The outcome

Our film was shown at a variety of events and exhibitions, stimulating discussion across industry. In consortium with Thales UK and industry partners in a project known as Project Tracey, BAE Systems is now working to produce and trial advanced demonstrators for the Royal Navy, for user experimentation on a Type 23 frigate.
