Engaging 10,000 Engineers

The brief

Network Rail manages Britain’s rail infrastructure, from track to tunnels to points and level crossings. It employs over 10,000 engineers whose job is to effectively maintain the railway for the train operating companies. Historically, those engineers were using a manual work system, but EY advised on a new iOS-device based system that offered significant time and, above all, safety advantages.

The work

EY commissioned Engage to create a staff roadshow to communicate the change to working methods. We quickly established that improved safety was the prime benefit to engineers (knowing where they were along miles of track, in the event of incidents or accidents) and majored on this, as well as efficiency benefits in our communications. We created a host of materials in print and film. But above all, we conceived, designed and created a unique interactive roadshow to be delivered internally. We designed an iPad interface to control a suite of interactive digital content – video, animation and case studies, which we also produced. And through bespoke software, we linked an iPad with a large plasma screen to replicate in-situ operation.

The outcome

Results from employee feedback and surveys was extremely positive, with maximum take-up of attendance at roadshow events. Allowing engineers to use an iPad to control their own roadshow content, they could familiarise themselves with the device as well as a host of new Apps that make working life safer, easier and less labour intensive. By developing a solution that could be delivered by internal teams, we also saved budget to be invested back into the project for the longer-term.
